Lessons, Growth, and the Heart Behind the Work

When I Started, I Thought I Was Just Taking a Job
Like many others, I entered the field of early childhood education thinking I was simply accepting a job — teaching, supervising, and supporting young children. But what I didn’t realize was how deeply this work would begin to shape me. Over the years, child care has become more than a career. It’s been a mirror, a teacher, and a constant invitation to grow both personally and professionally.
I’ve Learned the Power of Patience
Children don’t follow scripts — they follow their own rhythms. I’ve learned that real patience isn’t about “waiting nicely.” It’s about meeting a child where they are, adjusting my expectations, and finding grace in the chaos. From tying shoelaces for the 10th time to guiding through meltdowns, I’ve become more understanding — not just of children, but of people in general.

I’ve Become More Emotionally Intelligent
I used to think I was pretty good at reading people — until I worked with toddlers. They’ve taught me how to listen without words, how to notice the tiny signals in body language, and how to recognize when someone (even an adult) just needs a little comfort and consistency. These skills have strengthened not only my teaching but also my communication with parents and coworkers.

I’ve Grown Into a Leader
Whether you’re a classroom teacher, floater, or director, child care leadership finds you. I’ve learned to speak up, advocate for what’s right, take initiative, and problem-solve on the fly. This field doesn’t just grow children — it grows leaders. Being responsible for young lives gives you a sense of purpose that extends far beyond the classroom.

I’ve Discovered That Small Moments Matter Most
Some days, you go home tired and wonder if you made a difference. Then a child says, “You’re my favorite,” or zips their coat for the first time — and you realize: This is it. The growth is in the small wins. And that mindset has changed how I view life outside the classroom too. Working in this field has taught me to celebrate progress, not perfection.
I’m Constantly Inspired to Keep Learning
One of the biggest changes I’ve seen in myself is a hunger to learn more — not because I have to, but because I want to. Over time, I’ve taken professional development courses, joined webinars, earned credentials, and attended workshops that have shaped how I teach, lead, and grow.
