Child Care in the Summertime Heat

In the summer heat is on an all-time high, heat related problems occur when the body’s normal temperature-reducing mechanisms get overwhelmed, and become inefficient or stop working. We all know how active and exciting children get in the summer. Remember active body creates heat and heat exhaustion may occur during physical activity.

Signs include heavy sweating and pale, cool skin. The child may become nauseated and vomit. He or she may complain of a headache or dizziness and feel weak.

BE PROACTIVE! Three Things To Minimize Heat Exhaustion:

- Move child to cooler location

- Lay child down and raise his or her legs 6-12 inches

- Spray water or apply cool, wet cloths to head and torso
